Although there are no national holidays in August, it is a month full of festivals and re-enactments saluting the U. S. military.  These photos are from Mentor, OH’s “Take Pride in America Festival held every 2 years.  The festival features the Marine Drum & Bugle Corps and the Marine Silent Drill Platoon.

Other events worth photographing in August are the “America the Beautiful” celebration at the Lake Metroparks Farmpark featuring the U.S. Air Force Prism Brass Ensemble and the “Singing Angels”, a Civil War Re-enactment at the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Hale Farm and Village, and the annual D-Day Re-enactment in Conneaut, OH.  Additionally, many of Northeast Ohio’s County Fairs take place in August.  All of these events feature wonderful photo opportunities and hours of entertainment for all ages.  I always look forward to these events and August always seems like a blur of shooting every weekend.

About Kolman Rosenberg

My interest in photography began as a college newspaper and yearbook photographer during the stormy 1960s and 1970s. I was influenced by many of the great photojournalists and documentary photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Margaret Bourke-White and other black and white photographers of Life Magazine and the earlier Farm Security Administration. Though many of these photographers documented the horrors of war and the plight of poverty, they also showed me the dignity and adaptability of human beings in their desire to prevail.
