The Ballet – A Rich Photographic Subject

Verb2-13-81043-EditCleveland’s Verb Ballets continues to be one of my favorite photographic subjects.  I’ve been fortunate enough to have access to their dress rehearsals and though it’s very challenging with constant movement, harsh stage lighting, dark surroundings, and costumes that are often very bright, I am usually able to capture some beautiful shots!  The dancers are absolutely incredible athletes and artists as you will see in some of the photos!

About Kolman Rosenberg

My interest in photography began as a college newspaper and yearbook photographer during the stormy 1960s and 1970s. I was influenced by many of the great photojournalists and documentary photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Margaret Bourke-White and other black and white photographers of Life Magazine and the earlier Farm Security Administration. Though many of these photographers documented the horrors of war and the plight of poverty, they also showed me the dignity and adaptability of human beings in their desire to prevail.

    Kolman –

I know how difficult it is to shoot ‘the Verb’. Been there, done that, have the bad photographs to prove it! With that said, I gotta tell you…your shots are beautiful! I love them all, but the double exposure is absolutely stunning! Beautiful work!

Kolman – I always love your “motion” shots. They are strong in composition and yet delicate in their beautiful movement.
